In anticipation of her baby, a pregnant woman collects offerings in a sacred bundle. In anticipation of her baby, a pregnant woman collects offerings in a sacred bundle. A white feather… cedar and sage… A stone from the river… Each new gift in the bundle gives the baby strength and connects it to tradition, family and community. As they grow together, mother and child give each other gifts. Tasha Spillett-Sumner and Michaela Goade, two Indigenous creatives, create a lingering celebration of the bond between mother and child through the combination of beautiful words and radiant art.

Tasha-Spillett-Sumner is an award-winning poet and author with Cree and Trinidadian roots. She is working on her doctorate in education specializing in Indigenous areas. She lives on the Treaty 1 Reserve in Manitoba with her husband and daughter Isabella.

Michaela Goade is an award-winning illustrator of the Tlingit people. She grew up in the rainforests and beaches of Juneau, Alaska and still lives on traditional Tlingit territory. Most recently, she has illustrated the picture books We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, Encounter by Brittany Luby, and Shanyaakutlaax: Salmon Boy. The latter won the 2018 American Indian Youth Literature Best Picture Book Award.
